Hannah’s book club

Hannah Arendt continues to fascinate. Whether it's her views on totalitarianism, the nature of evil, or the threat to democracy, Arendt's insights offer valuable perspectives on our times.

That’s why we are revisiting her work and thought. In Hannah’s book club, we will delve into her texts together and discuss their relevance today. We aim not only to better understand her ideas but also to explore how her insights can help us navigate today’s complex political and social issues. Independent thinking and being critical, as Hannah Arendt encourages us, are always central to her philosophy. Whether you are a longtime reader of Hannah Arendt or someone who has yet to dare to pick up one of her books, everyone is welcome.

During four reading evenings, we will dive into the reading of four essays from her collection published as Crises of the Republic (1972): “Lying in Politics,” “Civil Disobedience,” “On Violence,” and “Thoughts on Politics and Revolution.” We will alternate between physical and online meetings, guided by experts on Hannah Arendt. You can read the essays at your own pace at home. It is possible to register for all the reading evenings, but this is not required.

Thoughts on Politics and Revolution

On Monday, January 13, we will discuss Hannah Arendt's essay 'Thoughts on Politics and Revolution,' which was originally published in 1972.

Organizer: Hannah Arendt Institute

The Hannah Arendt Institute was established by the Free University of Brussels (VUB), the University of Antwerp, and the city of Mechelen. Since then, KU Leuven, Ghent University, and UHasselt have also joined the collaboration. Both the Flemish Government and various partner organizations support its operations. By uniting expertise and knowledge, we aim to have an impact together.

Our diverse and rapidly changing society offers significant opportunities while simultaneously presenting us with concrete challenges. With the Hannah Arendt Institute, we aim to respond to these challenges and contribute to a stable society in which everyone feels involved. We do this by connecting scientific knowledge about citizenship, urbanity, and diversity with the insights and experiences of policymakers, organizations, and citizens.

The world needs you
