About the chair

Welfare: The Chair seeks to inspire young people to engage with subjects in mathematics, science, and technology, as well as sustainable innovation, guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the principle of decarbonization.

Decarbonization: To support these STEAM initiatives, VUB will transform an old municipal school into a state-of-the-art STEAM academy, built with the most sustainable technologies available. This renovation will showcase cutting-edge solutions for energy efficiency, heat and sound insulation, lighting, heating, and ventilation. The academy will serve as a model for circular and sustainable renovation, demonstrating how Belgium’s many outdated buildings can be modernized with a focus on decarbonization.

Activities within the chair

Thanks to the financing of HELIOS Foundation, the chair will oversee various activities, including:

  • Organizing STEAM workshops and activities for primary and secondary school students
  • Conducting academic research and producing international publications
  • Participating in international conferences and contributing to European policy discussions
  • Delivering guest lectures and seminars on the impact of STEAM education on youth, their career paths, and society
  • Developing a study on the use of sustainable technologies in building renovations, including the practical implementation of these innovations at the VUB STEAM Academy in Gooik.
