Interactive and targeted training courses

We currently provide four different training courses and an inhouse coaching programme. All our sessions are characterised by a highly interactive way of working, with room for exchange between participants. By working closely together with medical staff and listening to your feedback, we aim to offer content that is practically applicable and of real use to you.

All our courses are free of charge (for now) and are accepted between universities as the legally required yearly training for Medical Faculty. Accreditation for doctors is being applied for. All our existing courses are given in Dutch, but you are welcome contact us to speak about customized solutions.

Basic Module "Supervising workplace learning"

Our basic module focuses on the daily supervision of ASOs (and students) in the workplace. It covers planning and recognising training moments throughout the day, different types of supervision, methods and pitfalls for objective evaluation and using reflection as a learning resource. Techniques for constructively formulating feedback, improvement of clinical reasoning and the safe and efficient teaching of technical skills are also exercised. Furthermore, the use of Medbook as a tool for evaluation and short-term feedback will be outlined.

Target audience: Supervisor or Medical Faculty

Duration: Two 3-hour sessions, one month apart. Max. 15 participants.

Intervision

Intervision is a particularly effective and pleasant way of learning. In a small group, we exchange ideas on themes you choose, under supervision and following a fixed structure. You learn with and from colleagues about difficulties that each of you encounter daily when training in the workplace. An agenda is drawn up at the start of the session, after which a selection of themes is explored. You will leave with new insights, skills or a practical plan of action for improvement. Topics regularly covered include delivering challenging feedback, the safe delegation of tasks, conflicts or providing guidance on personal problems of ASOs.

Target audience: Supervisor or Medical Faculty

Always from 12:00 to 14:30, sandwiches provided, max. 5 participants

Training for "Stagemeesters"

The Stagemeester is the Medical Specialist and Supervisor offically responsible for training and evaluation of ASO's in their service and/or university. Whereas our basic module covers trainer skills for everyday supervision, this session -with annually changing content- addresses topics that are particularly relevant for the stagemeester. On the one hand, these may be organisational issues, such as managing the supervising team or systematically and objectively evaluating ASOs; on the other hand, the session may also cover individual skills that are specifically useful in your position. For instance, conducting periodic planning and evaluation interviews, or disciplining conversations in case of problems or a stagnating learning process. Because these sessions attract supervisors from different departments and hospitals, you will also be learning a lot from the way others deal with the challenges of this job.

Target audience: (future) stagemeesters

Content changes annually

Duration: 3 hours, max. 15 participants

Guiding ASO's through personal problems

Calls to Arts in Nood come from junior doctors in 25 per cent of cases, as 42 per cent of ASOs in Flanders are struggling with symptoms of burn out. This training is aimed for hospital supervisors wishing to contribute to changing this, be it as a mentor or not. The training addresses tools for recognising and discussing the most common problems among ASOs, interview techniques for personal discussions and creating a safe framework for them, as well as delineating the role of a supervisor or mentor from that of a therapist, social worker or ombudsman. We also explore some existing resources for support available outside the service and ways to enable the ASO to connect with them.

Target audience: Mentor, supervisor or stagemeester

Duration: 3 hours, max. 15 participants

In-house consultancy

The practical organisation of supervision in the workplace is incredibly important for the quality of training in the department. Clarity on the division of tasks and evaluation moments, but also evaluation materials or an internship booklet can make a big difference for efficient training. However, there is often a lack of time and resources to thoroughly review these matters once.

To remedy this, we offer stagemeesters the opportunity to comply with their annual mandatory training through an in-house trajectory: during 3 to 6 months, you and your team will work with us on pre-selected goals. During the trajectory, we identify where there is the greatest room for improvement in your department, we choose specific interventions tailored to your needs, and guide your team through their implementation. After a few months, we check with you to see whether the changes have led to the desired effect and/or where you can still make adjustments.

In terms of content, we offer three global themes - although other content can surely be discussed:

Track 1: The introduction and start of ASOs in your department

Track 2: The summative and formative evaluation of ASOs in your department

Track 3: Optimising use of Medbook for feedback and evaluation

Register for this track by emailing traindetrainergeneeskunde@vub.be, we will contact you as soon as possible to make further arrangements.

Newsletter 'Arts en Opleider' - Dutch only

An enormous amount of research has been conducted in the past decades on in-hospital training of Medical Specialists. The results -insights, best-practices and recommendations- do not always find their way into practice. For this reason, on behalf of Train the Trainer, we send out a newsletter three times a year in which we highlight one subject in a short literature study, supplemented by practical examples from the field.
