Sustainable research without limitations
BrIAS came into being in 2018 as an initiative of the VUB and ULB. It is an incubator for groundbreaking ideas and disruptive research. The very best scientists, artists or designers, from the most diverse fields and countries, come together to work, discuss, dream... on themes with a major social impact.
The vision of the Brussels Institute for Advanced Studies is to create an environment where top researchers from different fields can pursue their research in an atmosphere of complete freedom. BrIAS facilitates collaboration with recognized researchers at risk of persecution and from countries facing critical sustainability challenges.
A warm welcome for fellows and researchers
Based on submitted projects, BrIAS will offer fellowships and housing to a number, typically between 15 and 20, “BrIASfellows,” for periods of up to 10 months. Starting in 2024, it will be located in Usquare, the renovated military barracks in Ixelles, within walking distance of the campuses of both ULB and VUB. BrIAS wants to invite more researchers who are at risk in their countries or come from poorer countries. The stipend they may or may not receive from their home countries should allow BrIAS to supplement their living expenses in Brussels. Resources are needed for that. The incubator also wants to organize regular socio-cultural activities, such as a concert or an exhibition, for the Fellows as well as for everyone else.
