The course
- Do you already have a good command of the English language, but are you not yet familiar with academic English, and do you aim to further deepen your knowledge of the language? Then this advanced (academic) English course is tailored to your needs.
- The course focuses on expanding your language skills and acquiring a formal, academic register in both written and spoken contexts. Special emphasis is placed on the acquisition and usage of advanced vocabulary.
- Important grammar features are reviewed.
- We organise workshops in writing skills, focusing on language accuracy and the structure and style of academic texts. You learn to apply these skills when writing an academic, argumentative essay.
- Additionally, class discussions will be organized, challenging students to use (academic) English in realistic contexts. Authentic Anglophone texts form the starting point of these discussions, allowing students to further develop their (critical) reading, listening, and speaking skills.
- Important: this course requires preparatory work before each lesson and active participation in class.
Target group
This course is intended for those with a good basic knowledge of English who wish to further develop their English language (academic) skills further.

Registration conditions
In 23-24 this course is only intended for VUB students who can take this course as an optional course in their study program.
To ensure that this is the right course for you, you must first take a placement test. You cannot enroll for this course without passing the test. A few days after participation in the test, you will receive an email with information about the course you are eligible to enroll in (Academic English 1, Academic English 2, Academic English 3, or Academic English 5). The placement test is identical for all these courses. As a result, you can enroll for the test via any of the Academic English course pages. The key is to participate in this placement test first and foremost.
Please note: the placement tests are always scheduled before the course starts. That means that you already have to participate in the test before the start of the course. Unfortunately, you cannot enroll for the course once the deadline for the placement test has passed.
Register (for the test) by 12 February at the latest. Click here to participate in the placement test.
