Molenbeek has advanced to the final selection round for European Capital of Culture 2030, thanks in part to the support of VUB!

Over the past three years, we have worked alongside our partner university, ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles), and countless other local and international partners to develop the candidate dossier. These efforts have been rewarded. The European jury was convinced by the quality, relevance, and feasibility of the proposed programme. All selected candidate cities now have nine months to create a more detailed bidbook, which will be crucial in securing the final title of European Capital of Culture in 2030. Once again, support from the VUB community, our partner organisations, and local authorities will be essential. Together, we can showcase Molenbeek’s diversity, entrepreneurship, digital and artistic creativity, feeding a positive social imagination and change that will strengthen both our region and Europe. As an “Urban Engaged University,” VUB is naturally committed to supporting Brussels’ bid as it enters the final stretch.

Molenbeek for Brussels: A City Project for All Brussels Residents

Becoming European Capital of Culture in 2030 – and remaining a cultural beacon thereafter – is the ambition of Molenbeek for Brussels. This project aims to be a city-wide initiative, embraced and shaped by all residents of Brussels. It builds on Brussels’ unique strengths: its hyper-diversity, multilingualism, status as Europe’s political-administrative capital, and its cosmopolitan character with an internationally acclaimed arts scene. This is a chance to drive forward urgent urban transformations through artistic experimentation, cultural super-diversity, and social engagement.

How the VUB Community Can Contribute

The activities of Molenbeek for Brussels are broad-ranging but always inclusive and community-oriented. This project stands as a flagship initiative for Brussels, with a strong commitment to Europe and a focus on building and deepening partnerships. For VUB, this means increased visibility and positioning within Brussels and across Europe, as well as a cross-pollination of scientific, artistic, and cultural expertise. For our students, lecturers, and researchers, the project offers opportunities to engage in knowledge-sharing, debate, co-creative teaching, and research, in collaboration with both Brussels-based and European partner organisations.
