On Tuesday, 18 February, the acclaimed Arab film The Dupes (Al-Makhdū‘ūn), directed by Tewfik Saleh, will be shown at Cinema RITCS in Brussels. Released in 1972 and based on Ghassan Kanafani’s novel Men in the Sun, this powerful work explores themes of exile, displacement, and betrayal. Recently restored by the World Cinema Project, the film returns to the big screen in all its original poignancy.

The Dupes is one of the earliest Arab films to depict the Palestinian struggle. It follows the harrowing journey of three refugees from different generations as they search for a better future in Kuwait, portrayed as the “Promised Land.” Hidden within the steel tank of a smuggling truck, the refugees are faced with the stark realities of injustice and loss.
Director Tewfik Saleh eloquently described the film’s central theme:
"There is no individual salvation from a collective tragedy. That is the lesson history teaches us every day."
Despite facing censorship upon its initial release, the film’s message remains as powerful and relevant today as ever.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will be held, moderated by film historian Wouter Hessels (RITCS). The discussion will include artist and researcher Reem Shilleh, as well as Brigitte Herremans (UGent/UA), who will delve into the cinematic, societal, and political impact of this enduring classic.
