On the opening night of ScienceVille – a key section of the prestigious international documentary film festival DOCVILLE – the documentary The Day the Sunlight Disappeared will have its world premiere. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel warmly invites you to attend this special event.
Mythical like a dragon, yet undeniably real – we have become attached to an image of what a dinosaur might have been. A gentle touch on a layer of clay reveals fossilised bones, approached with care and reverence. "You don’t love me; you love the idea of me," says the T. rex.

This is not the only science documentary premiering at the festival. Another featured film is The Wonder Below, which explores the research of Sarah Ahannach (UAntwerpen) and is directed by Nina Landau and Janet van den Brand.

The end of an era
VUB geologists Cem Berk Şenel and Pim Kaskes have demonstrated that fine dust from pulverised rock—originating from the Chicxulub meteorite impact in Mexico 66 million years ago—remained suspended in the stratosphere for years. This blocked sunlight, causing global cooling, halting photosynthesis, wiping out vegetation, and ultimately collapsing the food chain. This chain of events contributed to the mass extinction of life on Earth, including the dinosaurs.
