Stand up for human rights during Write-Them-Free-Day!
Are you a VUB student who thinks human rights are very important? Do you also find it scandalous that all over the world people still end up behind bars after an unfair trial? Do you want to make a difference? Then Write-Them-Free-Day is for you!
You cannot violate or half-respect human rights. You need them all, always and everywhere, to lead a dignified life. Yet they are not respected everywhere. Too often, people are given an unfair trial and unjustly imprisoned. Amnesty International wants to do something about this! Via Write-Them-Free-Day the organization calls upon as many people as possible to write letters for people who deserve a fair trial. Every year tens of thousands of pupils and students participate in this action. The more people, the bigger the impact. Your participation can make an important difference!
This year Write-Them-Friday takes place on 11 February between 11h and 15h in De Markten. The theme is Right on Right. Concretely, you will write for four young people in prison while their trial did not meet the minimum requirements of a fair trial. They are Ciham (from Eritrea), Bernardo (from Guatemala), Mikita (from Belarus), and Nasrin (from Iran). You can read their stories on the Amnesty International website (www.amnesty-international.be/schrijfzevrijdagfilmpjes). During the event, Amnesty International and MABO will provide writing tables, paper, sample letters, ballpoint pens, and cards. The press will also receive an invitation. While you are writing, you can also enjoy continuous concerts of the Maboband. At the end of the day, the volunteers of the youth group MABO and Amnesty International will collect all the letters and bring them to the embassy. Do you want to know if your letter makes an impact? You can! Amnesty International always lets people know who has been released as a result of the letters. This shows that the project, despite being a difficult one, is getting results. This is entirely due to the support of many sympathizers worldwide. So don't hesitate, and set them free!
