In recent years, schools have become increasingly concerned about self-injurious behavior within the school context. However, we note that schools often receive inadequate guidance on how to deal with this behavior. They are given various and sometimes contradictory handles on how to respond to this behavior. However, an appropriate response upon discovery of self-injurious behavior is crucial and schools are the place to be for the prevention and follow-up of youth who self-injure.
Therefore, based on years of clinical expertise and research, we created a "Self-Injury Prevention Package for Schools." This package aims to provide schools with a theoretical framework on the one hand and some practical guidelines on the other.

The package includes a paper that provides guidance on how to set up a school protocol. First, a theoretical background is given, after which it is further elaborated on how self-injury can be approached within a school context.

In addition, there is a documentary in which experts by experience talk about self-injury. What was helpful, what did they learn and how do they think about the prevention of self-injury, are some of the topics that are discussed.

The documentary also includes an elaborate lesson. Self-injury is discussed in an approachable way. The purpose of this lesson is to break the taboo around self-injury, encourage young people who injure themselves to seek the necessary help, and promote self-care. In addition, we also offer support for the (care) teacher to bring this issue to the class.

Finally, the prevention package also provides brochures for parents and/or young people who are confronted with self-injury.

"The Self Injury Prevention Package for Schools" is a useful tool to bring self-injury into the classroom in an approachable way. It forms a practical guide for both (care) teachers and principals and provides a practical complement to the book "Zie me niet. Omgaan met zelfverwondend gedrag, thuis en op school".
