The Growing Effective & Equitable Nature-based Solutions through Inclusive Climate Actions (GREEN-INC) project, an ambitious European research initiative, is set to revolutionize urban sustainability by integrating equitable and effective Nature-based Solutions (NbS), such as green roofs and pocket parks, through Inclusive Climate Actions (ICAs).

"NbS have multiple benefits, but they can reinforce urban inequalities and injustices in cities. To better account for dilemmas and trade-offs, both theory and practice have embraced Inclusive Climate Actions (ICAs) that tackle climate change and urban inequalities simultaneously. In this project, we will systematically evaluate ICAs in European cities." says Boud Verbeiren, project coordinator and Professor in the Hydrology and Hydraulic Engineering research group of VUB.

Bringing together six leading universities – among which VUB - and five partner cities - Amsterdam, Brussels, Bucharest, Turin, and Skellefteå - this project aims to assess Inclusive Climate Actions and develop principles to address urban inequalities while enhancing ecosystem resilience across different European contexts.

GREEN-INC will conduct comprehensive research to ensure that NbS benefit all community members fairly. By developing a holistic environmental-socio-economic evaluation framework for NbS and establishing urban living labs together with local partners, the project will experiment with new approaches to create inclusive and just solutions to climate change challenges.
