About scientist Mark Kochzius
Professor Marc Kochzius teaches in VUB’s Biology programme and studies coral reefs around the world. For Coral City, filmmakers Charlotte De Cort and Camille Ghekiere followed him to Sri Lanka.
"Initially, they wanted to build the story around me, but after they met Kushlani Dissanayake, the local researcher I collaborate with, they found it more interesting to focus on her. That's a good thing, as it's no longer appropriate for us from the Global North to go to the Global South to conduct research without engaging with local scientists. The documentary now begins with Kushlani and her daughter, showing how closely their daily lives are intertwined with the sea. After that, it covers coral research in Sri Lanka."
