Multilingualism, Mediation, and Communication
Students of this profile study in one or two languages among the following: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
Note: As of the 2027-2028 academic year, all six of our profiles will be offered in the same six languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. This profile (previously titled "Multilingual Mediation and Communication") will therefore no longer feature Arabic, Chinese and Russian as possible language options.
In order to complete the master’s programme (60 ECTS), students need to take:
1. Compulsory courses (24 ECTS): The Master’s Thesis (18 ECTS), the course "Research Methodology" (3 ECTS) and the course “Linguistics and Literary Studies in Brussels” (3 ECTS).
2. Language-related courses (12 ECTS): Students can choose the courses in their selected language. Refer to the 2027-2028 programme brochure for the detailed course list.
3. Profile-related courses (24 ECTS):
- Compulsory (12 ECTS): Intercultural Communication (3 ECTS), Translation and Interpreting Studies (3 ECTS), Language Technologies & Multilingual AI (6 ECTS)
- Elective (12 ECTS): Students are free to choose any courses offered within this module. Refer to the 2027-2028 programme brochure for the detailed course list.
Master of Linguistics and Literary Studies

Research Methodology (3 ECTS): Students choose one Research Methodology course out of the following options:
Language related courses (12 ECTS)
You choose courses for 12 ECTS in one or two languages out of the following: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Students majoring in two languages must split the 12 ECTS credits evenly between them (6 ECTS for Language 1; 6 ECTS for Language 2).

Note: Multilingual Practices (6 ECTS): The course "Multilingual Practices" will no longer be offered as of 2027-2028. Current students can consult the course information via caliweb.vub.be and on Canvas.

Among the available ULB courses, you may only register one (6 ECTS); the course must match your profile. You cannot register exchange courses yourself — this is handled by our faculty secretariat.
