Mission.AI – full-day hands-on training for developers

CONTEXT

Few software developers have a background in AI and are now faced with the need to upskill. The good news is that software developers are excellent “self-learners”, continuously improving their skills from reading blogs, coding and interacting with colleagues.

However, although there are many blogs and code snippets available, this information is not always simple to interpret correctly because the bigger framework is missing. Moreover, there is a lot of incorrect, incomplete, unclear or misleading information to be found, and it is impossible for a layman to estimate what is and what is not accurate.

On the other hand, the step to an academic education is often too big. Even in postgraduate courses, we notice that the content, despite its practical character, was often found to be too theoretical.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The end users are software developers from industry (120k in Belgium) and researchers who program. Prior knowledge of Python is required.

APPROACH

The teaching material is oriented around very concrete hands-on programming challenges. Each challenge aims to explain a certain AI technique. However, they are formulated as a challenge for which classical methods are not suitable.

PRACTICAL DETAILS

Language:  English

Location : AI Experience Centre VUB or AI Experience Centre of BeCentral

LEARNING OUTCOMES

During these trainings participants will:

1. Increase their potential to solve problems with AI;

2. Extend their portfolio of solution strategies;

3. Learn about new and advanced AI techniques;

4. Get a better understanding of the mechanisms behind the AI techniques;

5. Learn about specific libraries, approaches, paradigms.

6. Become aware of potential ethical implications;

7. Develop creative thinking skills as well as a critical mindset

8. Develop intuition to assess the limitations of different techniques;

9. Get a better insight into the required effort to solve a problem with AI;

PROGRAMME OUTLINE

The day looks as follows:

9:30 The AI mission is introduced to the participants;

10:00 Participants tackle the problem, in pairs, on their own;

11:00 The tutor helps participants move forward and identifies potential problems;

12:30 Encountered problems are discussed in the group.

13:00 BREAK

14:00 The AI solution is presented; participants are asked to unravel how it works.

14:30 The mechanisms behind the AI technique/approach are explained.

15:30 Small exercises are done to empower the students.

16:30 Wrap-up and further reading

Breakfast, lunch and drinks will be provided

Mission 1: HELP, MY WEDDING IS COMING UP! - will be on the 8th of May

Mission 2: PREDICT CLIENT’S AVERAGE WAITING TIME - will be on the 15th of May

Mission 1. HELP, MY WEDDING IS COMING UP!

You are soon getting married and figure out you wish to write a program to optimally assign guests to the round “table of honour”. Unfortunately, a long and complicated family history means some people should absolutely be separated. Clearly, couples should not be split.

Mission 2. PREDICT CLIENT’S AVERAGE WAITING TIME

Your company delivers a cloud service through an online API. It is very serious about customer experience and wishes to keep average waiting times for customers below a threshold.
